Don’t waste your E?  What’s that all about?

E stands for Electronics -anything that takes electricity to run from batteries or by being plugged into a socket.

Electronic equipment and gadgets are the fastest growing waste stream in many countries. For many, electronics are part of modern life  – cell phones, computers, laptops, tablets, TVs, CDJ’s, projectors, speakers, wires and a growing number of gadgets. Every year we buy new, updated equipment to support our needs -there are upwards of 300 million computers and one billion cell phones produced every year. All of these electronics become obsolete or unwanted, often within 2-3 years of purchase. This global mountain of waste is expected to continue growing 8% per year, indefinitely (BCC Research).

What should we care?

Electronics contain toxic elements that can leach into the ground and contaminate the Earth (which we are reliant on for life -it’s all connected remember?).  Electronics should not be thrown away but recycled.  However, electronics typically cannot be recycled through normal municipal waste streams, and must be taken to special recycling locations.

EMA believes in responsibility.  There is a phrase “cradle to cradle”.  All things have an end life. Last time we checked, our culture is COMPLETELY reliant on electronics for the creation and delivery of our music so we need to take ownership of that cycle starting with awareness and ending with proper re-use, refurbishment, and disposal.

What can we do?

EMA’s Ewaste program is awareness + activism.  We have created “Socket Peep” (as seen above) as our mascot.  We will be throwing Ewaste drives starting in LA this summer.

1) Make your own Ewaste box and start putting potential ewaste aside

2) Educate yourself about the problems associated with Ewaste. Not all recyclers are created equal.

Electronic Music Alliance is an E-steward member

May 12th, 2013 Electronic Music Alliance will host a fun filled afternoon of arts, crafts, and electronic beats. Music provided by LA’s Eve Falcon and San Diego’s Kimberly St. John (EMA’s #KeepPINKAlive winner of 2012).

This will be the debut event for EMA celebrating a new alliance with Trash for Teaching, creating volunteer opportunities through the EMA Play it FWD program as well as the launch of EMA’s E-waste awareness program , “Don’t Waste Your E”!
EMA is encouraging attendants to bring a box to decorate and personalize at Trash for Teaching that they can then use as their own home e-waste collection box. Creative materials are provided by Trash for Teaching and are included in the ticket price. Tickets can be purchased in advance from Wantickets: www.wantickets.com/technotrash

*All ages family event (ages 4 and up). Dress creative & casual (aprons provided but be prepared for paint).

Trash for Teaching

The mission of T4T is to inspire a generation of LA’s most deserving young minds, protect the environment, and prepare students for 21st century job opportunities.

Trash for Teaching (T4T) is a material warehouse relying on the manufacturing community to provide material donations which supply the warehouse for open events and also provide materials brought to schools for children’s classroom projects. The e-Stewards Initiative is a project of the Basel Action Network (BAN), which is a 501(c)3 non-profit, charitable organization of the United States, based in Seattle, Washington. It is against the backdrop of the growing e-waste crisis that the e-Stewards Initiative was born. Without appropriate national and international legislation or enforcement in place in many regions, it is unfortunately left up to individual citizens, corporations, universities, cities – all of us – to figure out how to prevent the toxic materials in electronics from continuing to cause long term harm to human health and the environment, particularly in countries with developing economies.

From Nina Simone to Bruce Springsteen to Lupe Fiasco, music plays a key role in feeding any movement for justice. And now we want to hear your musical call to action.

We are thrilled to announce the third annual Dream Reborn Song Competition. With two years of incredible music from folks around the country, resulting in two incredible music videos, we’re ready for the next winner.

Green For All was founded on the belief that the work we do to create an inclusive green economy helps advance the vision for a just and equal world—the vision that Dr. King fought for, and ultimately lost his life for. Through our Dream Reborn Song competition, we celebrate his legacy through inspiring music.

The Dream Reborn Song Competition is about message and delivery. We know that to build the kind of inclusive and just economy that would make Dr. King proud, we need everyone to get involved.
