Supporting our Culture: Electronic Awakening -a documentary

In Electronic Awakening, director Andrew Johner lifts the veil on an underground spiritual movement that has developed within electronic music cultures worldwide. Electronic Awakening is an Ethnographic Documentary feature film which investigates the spirituality and mysticism of the Electronic Dance Music Culture and includes information about 2012 that hasn’t been released in the mainstream market.

Director’s Statement

In the summer of 2006 I traveled out to the west coast of the US with a grant from my university to conduct field research. My topic? The mysticism of electronic music culture. As an outsider to this scene, I was deeply intrigued to discover that such a deep spirituality existed within this community. Throughout the course of my initial field research, I continuously encountered stories of life-changing experiences that were happening on the dance floors at these events. From my previous research into the subject of ancient religions, I questioned if what was being experienced at these parties was in fact tapping the same “sacred” source of the shamans of the archaic past. I theorized that if there were some true and gnostic connection between ancient ritual and this contemporary youth phenomena, an intrinsic spirituality would have developed within this dance community. So when I discovered that a spiritual movement had awakened within the core of this scene, I immediately set out to transform my findings and recordings into this documentary film.

For several years I have been working on this project every single day, focused on its completion. In March 2011, I finally finished filming, most of the editing and also completed my book. However there is still a hefty amount of work to be done to get this project ready for the masses. I am using Kickstarter to raise the capital needed for final editing, color correction, sound mixing, promotion, submission fees to film festivals, and distribution. I refuse to let these last few financial hurdles keep this film from reaching its audience.
